The Quiet Water Leak Hiding in Your Toilet

A toilet that runs loudly is hard to ignore. A slow leak from the tank into the bowl can be much less obvious, especially in a busy household where the bathroom door is usually closed. One simple check can help you tell whether the toilet deserves a closer look.

Try A Simple Dye Check

Lift the tank lid and add a few drops of food coloring to the water, keeping the dye out of the bowl. Wait about 10 to 15 minutes without flushing. If color appears in the bowl, water is likely moving from the tank when it shouldn’t; flush afterward to clear the dye.

Look Before You Adjust

If the test suggests a leak, look for a flapper that doesn’t sit flat, a chain that catches, or water spilling into the overflow tube. These are common places to inspect, but toilet designs vary, so check the manufacturer’s instructions before changing parts. If the tank is unfamiliar, cracked, or difficult to access, a plumber can help identify the cause.

Make It Part Of A Routine

You don’t need to test every week. Recheck after a toilet starts refilling on its own, develops a new trickling sound, or gets a repair. A small note on your household maintenance calendar is enough to make this an occasional check rather than another daily chore.
